After fleeing slavery in Maryland, Douglass rose to prominence as a key figure in the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York. He became renowned for his powerful speeches and insightful writings against slavery. He penned three autobiographies, with his first, “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave” (1845), becoming a bestseller and playing a significant role in advancing the abolitionist cause.
